This year the founders of VME, Claire M & Lalahe and volunteer, Claire G-E took to pounding the streets to raise money to build a much needed second class for Idimayii.
Firstly, Claire M & Lalahe ran the Vitality North London Half Marathon on March 15th 2015. The race was started by Olympic Champion Mo Farah and the couple also got to run through Wembley Stadium giving Lalahe the chance to see where the world’s greatest football teams have played. The route was tougher in some parts when having to run uphill but they both completed the race in magnificent times. Claire M finished her race in 2:10 and Lalahe completed in an incredible 1:45.
This race was originally part of the training programme for the two Claire's who were fortunate to have got places in the Virgin Money London Marathon. Due to injury, Claire G-E was unable to take part in the Half Marathon having to rest ready for the big one!
The Virgin Money London Marathon was held on Sunday 26th April 2015. The atmosphere on the day was electric and very emotional. All around the 26.2 mile route, people lined the streets, cheering the pair on and calling their names from their running shirts ‘Claire 1 & Claire 2’.
Live music was playing throughout and people were handing out jelly beans and bananas to help the runners keep going. Family and friends of the two Claire's met in London on the day and together placed themselves at various landmarks around the route where the Claire's would see them. Their words of encouragement were key in getting the pair to the finish line.
They ran together for the first 12 miles and found this relatively easy. After this and due to Claire G-E’s recurring injury slowing her down, they continued their own race. Claire M completed the race in a fab 5: 45 with Claire G-E finishing in 6: 05. In the end, given the challenges each was running with, they were delighted to have completed the marathon and the time became quite irrelevant.
At the heart of everything was the knowledge they were raising money for the project and had been generously sponsored by so many of their family, friends and colleagues.
Their efforts were rewarded and at the last count they had raised nearly £2000 which is just incredible!!
